Esfarayen is a city in and the capital of Esfarayen County, North Khorasan Province in Iran. At the 2006 census its population was 60,372, in 17,334 families.

The largest ethnic groups of the Esfarayen city are Kurmanjs and Tats.

Esfarayen is one of the focal points for residence of Aryan tribes after entering Iran.

According to the medieval Arab geographer Yaqut al-Hamawi, the original name of Esfarayen was Asbarayin, which meant "the shield-bearers".


After the Islamic conquest of Persia, Esfarayen enjoyed a period of great prosperity,which came to an end with the fall of the Abbasid caliphate, when it fell victim to attacks and eventual destruction, although it was, eventually, rebuilt.

The town was in a completely ruinous state at the time of the ruler Ebrahim Afshar.



Some people believed Esfarayen was built by Esfandiar. Esfaraien among the first population centers that Aryan tribes which settled after arriving in Iran.

Esfarayen city, foot area of about 5.345 square kilometers in the North West Khorasan province, on the southern slopes of the mountains Aladagh and  the south and southwest mountain Shah Jahan, Geographically at 40 degrees and 36 minutes north and 57 degrees wide and 17 degrees and 37 minutes and 56 minutes to 7 degrees and 57 minutes east longitude, and elevation 3032 to 1000 meters above sea level.
Because of the mountainous northern parts of the districts of Esfarāyen, has a temperate climate is mountainous, but parts of south and southwest of it, because of the proximity to the desert, hot dry summers and cold winters has.
